Author Lisa Hayek identifies the Davida helmet as one of the best in retro and vintage inspired designs. Published in July 2014 by Braun, Retro and Vintage Design is a definitive reference book of design history and a source of inspiration for trend-setters at the same time. Whether regarding food, technology, fashion or transportation, it is a celebration of nostalgia that makes reference to bygone era’s.

With the aesthetics of the past firmly back in style, retro is hip and vintage is cult. Together, they have become buzzwords. While Ray-Ban Sunglasses, Eames Chairs, Levis 501, or Chanel No. 5 have always been popular and evolved into style icons, other products and styles were (almost) forgotten. Alongside the Davida Classic Helmet, Hayek makes her selection of the ” rediscovered iconic products which have become more popular today than they ever where before and which now form the central part of a hip lifestyle “.

Taking inspiration extending from Bauhaus to Hip Hop, top brand designers have successfully reissued old originals and creative professionals from around the world design new innovative products with a retro look.

Featuring high quality imagery of the best in retro and vintage inspired designs, Hayek does not limit her choice of products to those back in the limelight in their original version, but includes products concealing modern technology behind the old exterior, and where retro and vintage inspired designers prove their niftiness and sense of humour by creating products which combine together the full of charm of the past with a technological twinkle.

Retaining all the original features of the 1950’s low dome racing helmet, the Davida Classic Helmet was launched in the 1984 by Davida and is an authentic example of one of the first helmets ever produced for motorcycling. Manufactured using traditional materials and techniques the Davida Classic is a hand built product of exceptional quality.

A popular and much loved helmet, attracting a sentimental and affectionate following, especially amongst riders of Vintage and Classic Bikes, over the past 30 years the Davida Classic has received some eclectic makeovers and taken a number of starring roles.

Adorned with raven feathers the Davida Classic crowns the Prince of Darkness in 1998 for Dominik Scherrers , Hell For Leather - a frenzied leather and oil spectacular, biker opera telling of Satan’s banishment to Hell via London.

Just to show retro and vintage inspired fashion is nothing new, for the Mean Fuckers M.C. in London, between the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s, the Davida Classic was an essential part of completing their Rocker look. Former Mean Fucker member Matt Davies went onto to establish Dice Magazine, whilst Ben Part, a regular photographer for Davida, is now co-founder with Gary Inman of Sideburn Magazine and Dirtquake

In 1997, it was the finishing touch for former Sex Pistol, Ed Pole Tudor & 1990’s ‘It Girl’, Tamara Beckwith in Robert Milton Wallace’s Tunnel of Love. With music by Joe Strummer, (The Clash), it’s quirky and humorous short film about falling in love on motorcycles.

Nicknamed the ‘ Pudding Basin’ or ‘ Piss Pot’ the Davida Classic does not currently conform to any road safety standard. It is however suitable for use on public roads across the world where there is no requirement to wear a safety certified helmet and in countries where regulations exist it can still be worn on trikes, quads, classic cars and by sidecar passengers. It is available in the majority of the 100 or more Davida Colourways as well as in the racing design of the 17 World Champions who wore this style of helmet in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
